The East St. Louis Park District was formally created through a public referendum over a century ago on August 22, 1908. The district now covers 240 acres of Parkland that comprises nine parks and playgrounds. In addition, when resources permit, the district endeavors to help its local partners maintain recreational space. The Park District’s boundaries go beyond the city limits and include the neighboring communities of Alorton, Centreviile, and Washington Park.
The East St. Louis Park District is an autonomous body governed by five elected commissioners who serve six years, staggered terms. The District’s corporate powers include the power to acquire and develop land for recreation and cultural purposes, to establish a park policing unit, pass ordinances for the maintenance and management of these facilities, establish user fees and levy taxes.
The history of the East St. Louis Park District has been one of prosperity during its conception and until the start of the area’s economic and population decline in the 1970s. With the adventure of the 21st century the city and region are showing signs of recovery that will help the district to grow and better provide wholesome recreational opportunities for all the residents.
